2011 Lexus LX 570

2011 Lexus LX 570.

Vehicle type: Four-door utility vehicle

NAGS® numbers*: Windshield part number FW2909 solar, heated (wiper park), acoustic, rain sensor; door glass FD24022-23 front R-L, laminated, acoustic, and FD24024-25 rear R-L; quarter glass FQ24028-29 R-L, antennas; vent glass FV24026-27 R-L; and back glass FB23733 heated, antenna

Helpful tools or supplies: Replacement clips for the windshield side moldings; cutout wire for back glass removal

Watch for: The windshield side moldings are held in place by six clips that are difficult to release and easily damaged. The "touch style" release will take practice to master, so have replacement clips on hand until the procedure is second nature. To date, there are no aftermarket parts for the quarter glass on this vehicle, and NAGS does not mention the antennas built into both parts. The driver side part has one antenna connector and the passenger side has two. Also, the bottom edge of this back glass is exposed and very close to the pinchweld wall, making it difficult to cut out without damaging the vehicle body. Cutout wire is recommended for removal.

A. Windshield
Preparation

1. This vehicle is equipped with a rain sensor as standard equipment. Check operation before attempting removal. To do so:

2. Cover the front seats, floorboards, dash and steering wheel with a clean drop cloth or disposable plastic covers. Note: Always wear eye and hand protection when working with glass. Make sure you have the right glass and moldings and that the urethane systems you are about to use are current. Windshield part number is FW2909.

3. Drape the fender with a fender cover and tape up any vulnerable areas on the vehicle to protect against possible damage. Tape up the defroster vents to prevent debris from falling into the openings.

4. To remove the rearview mirror, loosen the T25 Torx set screw in the base of the mirror.

5. To remove the rain sensor, first remove the decorative trim around the sensing unit. Pull down the retainer clip located under the decorative cover and pull the cover off. There are two retainers that hold the sensor to the bracket. Pull out the side retainers and release the sensor from the lens. Let it hang. Warning: Do not turn on the vehicle while the rain sensor is separated from the glass. This can damage the sensor.

6. Remove the interior garnish moldings on the passenger side to disconnect the heated wiper park electrical connector.

7. Remove the windshield-wiper nut covers.

8. Remove the windshield-wiper nuts using a 15-millimeter wrench or socket.

9. The side moldings are held in place by four clips attached to the wall of the pinchweld along the A pillar and two on the roof directly in front of the luggage rack. They are difficult to release and easily damaged. Use a molding-release tool to release one side of the clip while applying upward pressure. Then, release the other side. This "touch style" release will take practice to master. Have replacement clips on hand until the procedure is second nature.

10. Like many luxury vehicles, the engine compartment on this vehicle has many decorative covers that hide the unsightly parts of the engine. To remove the cowl, you will need to remove many of these decorative panels. This is not a difficult process, but it is time consuming due to the many panels and fasteners. All of the fasteners are the typical expansion type with a center locking pin. Simply lift the center pin; you can then lift out the rest of the fastener and reuse it.

11. The lower cowl panel is tucked underneath the bottom edge of the glass. Once the other panels are removed, simply pull up on the leading edge and pull it out from the bottom edge of the glass.

12. The top is a PAAS style with an exposed edge and underside trim. Note: Before beginning windshield removal, verify the new windshield is the correct one and the urethanes and primers are current. Never use outdated products as this could jeopardize the structural integrity of the vehicle and the safety of its passengers.

Removal

13. Make sure cutting blades are sufficiently sharp.

14. Before cutting out the windshield, remove contaminants from the glass and pinchweld to prevent contact with the urethane.

15. Tape up the area around the perimeter of the glass to avoid damaging the paint during cutout.

16. Make sure the two wiring harnesses (the rain sensor/mirror and the wiper park heater) are far enough away from the cutout area that they will not be damaged or in the way.

17. Use the cutting tools of your choice to remove the glass from the adhesive bead. You can use a cold knife if desired. If you use a power tool, lubricate the cutting area with water. Spray the top and sides; then make your cuts.

18. Take the windshield out of the opening using a set of vacuum cups. Make sure the vacuum cups do not overlap a crack in the glass. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation.

Installation

19. After cutting the windshield out, remove contaminants such as dirt, moisture and debris from the pinchweld. Clean the dashboard.

20. Dry fit the new glass to the opening. Mark your glass using a grease pencil or retention molding tape.

21. Place your vacuum cups on the new windshield in the appropriate location.

22. Set the windshield onto the old urethane.

23. With the windshield resting in the opening, make sure it is in the right spot.

24. Adjust both sides to the correct setting, marking the passenger side, then the driver side. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation.

25. Follow the urethane manufacturer's recommendations for installation.

26. Clean the inside of the windshield using a urethane manufacturer-recommended product. Do not touch the bonding area of the windshield after cleaning, prepping or priming it.

27. Wear powder-free Nitrile gloves to protect against harsh chemicals.

28. Apply the glass prep and primer following the urethane manufacturer's recommendations.

29. Using the tool of your choice, remove the original urethane bead, leaving 1 mm-2 mm of existing urethane on the pinchweld. Make sure there are no contaminants and do not touch the pinchweld after you have prepped the area.

30. Apply the pinchweld primer only to the areas where needed, and follow the urethane manufacturer's recommendations. Allow preps and primers to dry as recommended by the urethane manufacturer.

31. Apply a triangular bead of urethane to the same path as the freshly cut urethane on the pinchweld. Before cutting your V-notch, cut the tip off of your nozzle with a nozzle-cutter. With the cut nozzle, measure to the top of the roofline, and at 1/16-inch higher than the roofline, make a mark on the nozzle with a pen or marker. Notch the nozzle up to the marked line; this will give you the appropriate triangular bead.

32. Lift the windshield from the windshield stand or workstation using vacuum cups. Set the windshield on the urethane at the mark you made during your dry fit. Lower the driver's side of the windshield onto the urethane and line it up with the dry-fit mark; it is now in place.

33. The windshield is now ready to be decked. Press firmly to ensure a good seal.

34. Before reinstalling the parts, check for leaks. Use a leak detector to go over the perimeter of the windshield. If you find a leak, apply more pressure or add more urethane to the spot and ensure that the glass makes contact with the wet urethane.

35. Reinstall the removed parts in reverse order.

36. Allow the urethane to cure according to the urethane manufacturer's recommended cure time before returning the vehicle to the customer. Warning: Disregarding the safe drive-away time that your urethane manufacturer recommends could jeopardize the structural integrity of the vehicle and the safety of its passengers.

37. You have completed the removal and replacement of the windshield.

B. Front door glass

Removal

1. Make sure you have the right glass. Front door glass part numbers are FD24022-23 R-L.

2. Remove the screw cover behind the interior door-latch handle. Remove the Phillips screw.

3. To remove the door switch instrument panel, insert a flat plastic tool or putty knife between the armrest and the instrument panel to release the two main clips that hold it to the door panel. These two clips are in a front and back position. There are three more clips that stabilize the panel right to left along the sides. Disconnect the wiring harnesses and set them aside. You will need to reconnect them later to run the regulator.

4. Remove the Phillips screw underneath the instrument panel near the door pull.

5. There are 10 door-panel retainers on the back edge of the panel that can be easily released using a door-pad tool. Once you have released the retainers, lift the panel up and off the doorframe. Disconnect the two linkages that control the door latch and lock.

6. Set the door panel in a safe place.

7. Remove the interior vapor shield from the access holes.

8. Loosen all of the internal parts that stabilize the glass and enable it to move freely up and down.

9. Reconnect the door window switch to its wiring harness.

10. Align the door regulator to the access holes to facilitate removal of the bolts that hold the window to the regulator mechanism.

11. Remove the two bolts. The glass is laminated, so take care to avoid damage during removal. Pull the regulator scissor channel away from the glass channel carefully, so you do not tweak the glass and fracture it. It is better to pull the scissor channel away from the glass rather than the glass away from the scissor channel.

12. Once the scissor channel is separated from the glass part, lift out the glass and its channel.

Installation

13. Make sure there isn't any broken glass or bare metal exposed in the weatherstrips and channels.

14. Lower the regulator to the full down position.

15. Insert the glass into the doorframe, taking care not to chip an edge, causing the glass to fracture.

16. Place the glass edges into the vertical run guides, front and back. Make sure the glass can move freely up and down.

17. Bring the regulator up to the access holes, attach the lower glass channel to the scissor channel and reattach with the bolts.

18. Check operation.

19. After a door glass or door-glass run has been replaced, the jam protection function might operate unexpectedly when the auto up feature is used. If this happens, repeat the following steps at least five times:

If the initialization is not completed properly, the LIN communication line or the BEAN communication system might malfunction. This might require dealer assistance.

20. You have completed the removal and replacement of the front door glass.

C. Rear door glass

Removal

1. Make sure you have the right glass. Rear door glass part numbers are FD24024-25 R-L.

2. Remove the screw cover behind the interior door-latch handle. Remove the Phillips screw.

3. To remove the door switch instrument panel, insert a flat plastic tool or putty knife between the armrest and the instrument panel/ashtray to release the two main clips that hold it to the door panel. These two clips are in a front and back position. There are three more clips that stabilize the panel right to left along the sides. Disconnect the wiring harnesses and set them aside. You will need to reconnect them later to run the regulator.

4. Remove the Phillips screw underneath the instrument panel near the door pull.

5. There are eight door-panel retainers on the back edge of the panel that can be easily released using a door-pad tool. Once you have released the retainers, lift the panel up and off the doorframe. Disconnect the two linkages that control the door latch and lock.

6. Set the door panel in a safe place.

7. Remove the interior vapor shield from the access holes.

8. Reconnect the door window switch to its wiring harness.

9. Align the door regulator to the access holes to facilitate removal of the bolts that hold the window to the regulator mechanism.

11. Loosen the front vertical run guide and the division bar between the door glass and the vent glass. The division bar has the typical top screw located under the weatherstrip at the top of the doorframe, the beltline bolt and the bottom bolt.

12. Once the scissor channel is separated from the glass part and the other parts are loosened enough to free the glass from its confines, lift out the glass and its channel.

Installation

13. Make sure there isn't any broken glass or bare metal exposed in the weatherstrips and channels.

14. Lower the regulator to the full down position.

15. Insert the glass into the doorframe, taking care not to chip an edge, causing the glass to fracture.

16. Place the glass edges into the vertical run guide in the front and the division bar in the back. Make sure the glass can move freely up and down.

17. Bring the regulator up to the access holes and attach the lower glass channel to the scissor channel, but do not tighten yet.

18. Tighten all internal parts that you loosened to allow for glass removal, and doublecheck that the glass moves up and down freely.

19. Tighten the fasteners that secure the glass channel to the regulator scissor channel.

20. Check operation.

22. You have completed the removal and replacement of the rear door glass.

E. Quarter glass

Removal

1. Make sure you have the right glass. Quarter glass part numbers are FQ24028-29 R-L.

2. The glass is encapsulated with a bright chrome strip on the bottom. To date, there are no aftermarket parts for this vehicle's quarter glasses. NAGS does not mention that there are antennas built into both parts. The driver side part has one antenna connector and the passenger side has two.

3. To disconnect the antenna system on either side, remove the rear-most quarter panel to gain access.

4. Open the seatbelt bolt cover and remove the 13-mm seatbelt bolt.

5. Displace the rear hatch weatherstrip and pry out the rear-most edge of the panel. The panel is held in place by four panel retainers.

6. Use your hands to pull out the panel. There are no other retainers around the quarter panel.

7. Disconnect the wire connectors, and remove the glass.

8. There is one large gob of urethane near the door opening, but the rest of the urethane is relatively thin and near the part's edges. Use the cutting tools of your choice to remove the glass from the adhesive bead. Note, there are four locator pins in the four corners of the glass that you will need to be aware of during cutout.

Installation

9. After cutting the quarter glass out, remove contaminants such as dirt, moisture and other debris from the pinchweld.

10. Dry fit the new quarter glass to the opening.

11. Place your vacuum cups on the glass in the appropriate location.

12. Set the glass onto the old urethane.

13. With the glass resting in the opening, make sure it is in the right spot.

E. Back glass

Removal

1. Make sure you have the right glass. Back glass part number is FB23733.

2. Remove the rear wiper by lifting the cap and removing the 10-mm nut from the wiper post. Lift the wiper from the post.

3. The two side edges of the back glass have underside rubber moldings attached.

4. Pull off the top and side interior garnish moldings by releasing the several underside retainers.

5. Be careful of the top one, as it houses the high-mounted brake light. The edges snap into the side moldings. The side moldings can be removed without removing the piston rods. Removal of these trim pieces is necessary to access wiring connectors and the spoiler fasteners.

6. Disconnect the wiring harnesses for the rear defroster and antennas.

7. To remove the rear spoiler, remove the grommets that hide the two 10-mm screws on the top corners, and pinch the stabilizing pin that wedges into a hole in the top center.

8. Once you have removed the spoiler and wiper, cut out the glass from the top hatch. The bottom edge is exposed and very close to the pinchweld wall, making it difficult to cut out without damaging the vehicle body. If the glass is already broken, it will be easier. Cutout wire is recommended.

Installation

9. After cutting the back glass out, remove contaminants such as dirt, moisture and other debris from the pinchweld.

10. Dry fit the new glass to the opening. Mark your glass using a grease pencil or retention molding tape.

11. Place your vacuum cups on the new back glass in the appropriate location.
