Watch for: Removal of the Overhead Center Console (OCC) is very difficult and is not covered in the service manual. The clips holding it in place can be damaged during removal. Make sure you have the instructions from your adhesive manufacturer on prepping a factory pre-primed part. And, use OEM glass. The windshield on this vehicle is unique in many ways, and the OEM glass package includes: accessory bracket for rain sensor, GPS; pre-primed glass; lower retainer for cowl panel; upper molding; and setting blocks.

1. Cover the front seats, floorboards, dash and steering wheel with a clean drop cloth or disposable plastic covers. Note: Always wear eye and hand protection when working with glass. Make sure you have the right glass and moldings and that the urethane systems you are about to use are current. Windshield part number is FW3173.

2. Drape the fender with a fender cover and tape up any vulnerable areas on the vehicle to protect against possible damage. Tape up the defroster vents to prevent debris from falling into the openings.

3. Test operation of the rain sensor before beginning the windshield removal process. Before checking the operation of the rain sensor, make sure all the windows, doors and hood are closed.

4. The windshield on this vehicle is unique in many ways and it is recommended that you use OEM glass. The OEM glass package includes:

5. Note, steps 5-13 are the most difficult for the removal and replacement of the windshield.

6. The under-mirror decorative panel is made up of three parts: the upper panel and the two joining lower panels with a seam in the middle. Remove the upper panel first by prying it away from the windshield using a plastic pry tool. Then, separate the lower panel at the seam, and from the base of the mirror using a small, flat-head screwdriver.

7. Unplug and remove the GPS circuit board from its mounting by releasing the clips on the right side and sliding the other side from the retainer.

8. Grasp the mirror at its base and give it a quarter-turn to release.

9. The wiring harness is threaded through an eyelet in the accessory bracket mounted to the glass, so you will need to unplug and remove the rain sensor.

You will also need to drop the Overhead Center Console (OCC) from its mounting in the headliner to access the wiring connectors.

10. Remove the decorative collar from around the OCC using a small plastic pry tool or pocket screwdriver. Remove the secondary collar in the same manner.

11. The OCC has four metal clips (two in the back and two on the sides), four built-in plastic retainers on the side, and two hinge pins in the front.

The release of the plastic retainers is very difficult and is not covered in the service manual. To release the plastic side retainers, use a plastic pry tool to pry on the sides. The OCC will drop to the metal clips, which prevent it from falling from the headliner. Use two narrow plastic paddles to depress the metal clips simultaneously, to release the back and then the front clips.

12. Once you have released the OCC from its mounting, you can access the wiring connectors. The connectors for the GPS and rain sensor are mounted on a bracket snapped into another bracket near the front of the opening. Release the connectors from their mountings and disconnect.

Thread the wiring through the eyelet on the accessory bracket and carefully pry off the rain sensor lens.

13. Remove the interior garnish molding. This is important, as the moldings are covered in fabric. If you snag the fabric with a cutting tool, it could cause enough damage bad to necessitate replacement. Remove the airbag screw cover and the 25T Torx screw on both sides, and separate the rest of the retainers with your fingers.

14. Remove the windshield-wiper nut covers.

15. Remove the windshield-wiper nuts using a 16-millimeter wrench or socket.

16. The cowl panel is a five-piece cowl. To remove the two wings, remove the three 25T Torx screws.

Under the wings, remove the four 30T Torx screws from the front edges of the two corner cowls. Then, remove the hood weatherstrip and release the five quarter-turn retainers from the leading edges of the main cowl panel. Pry the glass edge of the cowl panel from the glass-mounted retainer. Lift and remove the main cowl panel.

Set it in a safe place.

17. The A-pillar moldings extend from the top of the fender to the top of the back glass. They are held in place with three sandwich-type clips going up the side, and belt-molding-type clips along the top.

Release the A pillar clips using a plastic pry tool. Use your fingers to release the clips along the top. Put the moldings in a safe place to protect against damage.

18. The top molding will be damaged upon removal. The new glass comes with a replacement.

Note: Before beginning windshield removal, verify the new windshield is the correct one and the urethanes and primers are current. Never use outdated products as this could jeopardize the structural integrity of the vehicle and the safety of its passengers.

19. Make sure cutting blades are sufficiently sharp. Tape up any areas subject to damage during windshield removal. Take care during cutout, as the glass is in very close tolerance to the vehicle body.

20. Before cutting out the windshield, remove contaminants from the glass and pinchweld to prevent contact with the urethane.

20. Use the cutting tools of your choice to remove the glass from the adhesive bead. Tape up the vertical leg of the blade, or use padded blades to cut out the glass.

21. Take the windshield out of the opening using vacuum cups. Make sure the vacuum cups do not overlap a crack in the glass. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation.

22. After cutting the windshield out, remove contaminants such as dirt, moisture and debris from the pinchweld. Clean the dashboard.

23. Dry fit the new glass to the opening. Mark your glass using a grease pencil or retention molding tape.

24. Place your vacuum cups on the new windshield in the appropriate location.

25. Set the windshield onto the old urethane.

26. With the windshield resting in the opening, make sure it is in the right spot.

27. Adjust both sides to the correct setting, marking the passenger side, then the driver side. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation.

28. The glass for this vehicle is a Guardian part with a pre-primed bonding surface. Follow the urethane manufacturer's recommendations for installation of pre-primed glass.

29. Clean the inside of the windshield using a urethane manufacturer-recommended product. Do not touch the bonding area of the windshield after cleaning it.

30. Wear powder-free Nitrile gloves to protect against harsh chemicals.

31. Prep the glass following the urethane manufacturer's recommendations.

32. Warm the new rain sensor pad with a hair dryer or by placing it in your pocket for a period of time. Peel off the tape backing and place it on the rain sensor lens. Place the lens in the mounting bracket and press to eliminate bubbles. Immediately install the mirror on the bracket to hold the lens in place. To do so, thread the wiring harness through the accessory bracket eyelet and then attach the mirror to the bracket with a quarter-turn lock.

Check for bubbles in the lens area and repeat if necessary. Mount the GPS circuit board to the accessory bracket.

33. Using the tool of your choice, remove the original urethane bead, leaving 1-2 mm of urethane on the pinchweld. Make sure there are no contaminants and do not touch the pinchweld after you have prepped the area.

34. Apply the pinchweld primer only to the areas where needed, and follow the urethane manufacturer's recommendations. Allow preps and primers to dry as recommended by the urethane manufacturer.

35. Apply a triangular bead of urethane to the same path as the freshly cut urethane on the pinchweld. Before cutting your V-notch, cut the tip off of your nozzle with a nozzle-cutter. With the cut nozzle, measure to the top of the roofline, and at 1/16-inch higher than the roofline, make a mark on the nozzle with a pen or marker. Notch the nozzle up to the marked line; this will give you the appropriate triangular bead.

36. Lift the windshield from the windshield stand or workstation using vacuum cups. Set the windshield on the urethane at the mark you made during your dry fit. Lower the driver's side of the windshield onto the urethane and line it up with the dry-fit mark; it is now in place.

37. The windshield is now ready to be decked. Press firmly to ensure a good seal.

38. Before re-installing the parts, check for leaks. Use a leak detector to go over the perimeter of the windshield. If you find a leak, apply more pressure or add more urethane to the spot and ensure that the glass makes contact with the wet urethane.

39. Connect the wiring harness for the rain sensor and GPS, and check operation. Attach the connector bracket to the header bracket. Re-install the OCC by pressing upwards firmly until all retainers make an audible click or the OCC is in place. Replace the inner and outer decorative collars.

40. Re-install the remaining parts in reverse order.

41. Allow the urethane to cure according to the urethane manufacturer's recommended cure time before returning the vehicle to the customer. Warning: Disregarding the safe drive-away time that your urethane manufacturer recommends could jeopardize the structural integrity of the vehicle and the safety of its passengers.
