Windshield and back glass removal and replacement instructions

NAGS numbers*: Windshield part numbers FW3160 solar, and FW3161 solar, with electrochromatic mirror; back glass part numbers FB24453 upper part, heated, solar, one hole; and FB24454 lower part, solar, logo

Windshield
Preparation

1. Cover the front seats, floorboards, dash and steering wheel with a clean drop cloth or disposable plastic covers. Note: Always wear eye and hand protection when working with glass. Make sure you have the right glass and moldings, and the urethane systems you are about to use are current. Windshield part numbers are FW3160 and FW3161.

2. Drape the fender with a fender cover and tape up any vulnerable areas on the vehicle to protect against possible damage. Tape up the defroster vents to prevent debris from falling into the openings.

3. Remove the rearview mirror by loosening the T25 Torx set screw in the base of the mirror and sliding the mirror off the pad.

4. Remove the windshield-wiper nut covers.

5. Remove the windshield-wiper nuts using a 17-millimeter wrench or socket. Move the wiper arm in an up-and-down motion to break it loose from the post, or use a wiper puller. Caution: Wipers can sometimes be hard to remove. To avoid stressing the post, use a wiper puller.

6. Remove the A-pillar moldings that extend the entire length of the pillar and roof line, ending at the top of the back glass. There are four, two-part clips similar to those on past Honda vehicles, along the pillar. There are five clips along the roof line. Have replacement clips handy before beginning the replacement.

7. To remove the cowl panel, first remove the five pull-up center retainers. Then release the underside fasteners by prying upward from under the cowl fascia. There are rubber-like hinge/fender bumpers attached to the corners of the cowl panels. Take care to avoid damaging them during panel removal. Remove the panel and set it in a safe place.

8. The top molding is a typical wraparound that can be replaced with a universal molding. Note: Before beginning windshield removal, verify the new windshield is the correct one and the urethanes and primers are current. Never use outdated products as this could jeopardize the structural integrity of the vehicle and the safety of its passengers.

Removal
9. Make sure cutting blades are sufficiently sharp.

10. Before cutting out the windshield, remove contaminants from the glass and pinchweld to prevent contact with the urethane.

11. Use the cutting tool of your choice to remove the glass from the adhesive bead. Note: When using any power tool, lubricate the cutting area with water. Spray the top and sides; then make your cuts.

12. After cutting the sides and top, cut out the bottom portion of the glass. Spray the bottom of the windshield with water at least 4-to-5 inches above the urethane on the glass, so the water flows down into the urethane while you make your final cut across the bottom of the windshield. Caution: Never use your head to push, as this could result in back and neck injuries.

13. Take the windshield out of the opening using a set of vacuum cups. Make sure the vacuum cups do not overlap a crack in the glass. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation.

Installation
14. After cutting the windshield out, remove contaminants such as dirt, moisture and debris from the pinchweld. Clean the dashboard.

15. Attach the top molding to the glass edge.

16. Dry fit the new glass to the opening. Mark your glass using a grease pencil or molding-retention tape.

17. Place your vacuum cups on the windshield in the appropriate location.

18. Set the windshield onto the old urethane.

19. With the windshield resting in the opening, make sure it is in the right spot.

20. Adjust both sides to the correct setting, marking the passenger’s side, then the driver’s side. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation.

21. Follow the urethane manufacturer’s recommendations for installation.

22. Clean the inside of the windshield using a urethane manufacturer-recommended product. Do not touch the bonding area of the windshield after cleaning, prepping or priming. Make sure there is no glass cleaner trapped by the molding. To do so, tip the glass vertically, taking care not to touch the bonding area. If moisture drips from the molding, wipe clean and set the glass down on the work surface.

23. Wear powder-free Nitrile gloves to keep off chemicals.

24. Apply the glass prep and primer following the urethane manufacturer’s recommendations.

25. Using the tool of your choice, remove the original urethane bead, leaving 1-2 millimeters of existing urethane on the pinchweld. Make sure there are no contaminants and do not touch the pinchweld after prepping the area.

26. Apply the pinchweld primer only to the areas where needed, and follow the urethane manufacturer’s recommendations. Allow preps and primers to dry as recommended by the urethane manufacturer.

27. Apply a triangular bead of urethane to the same path as the freshly cut urethane on the pinchweld. Before cutting your V-notch, cut the tip off of your nozzle with a nozzle-cutter. With the cut nozzle, measure to the top of the roofline, and at 1/16-inch higher than the roofline, make a mark on the nozzle with a pen or marker. Notch the nozzle up to the marked line; this will give you the appropriate triangular bead.

28. Lift the windshield from the windshield stand or workstation using vacuum cups. Set the windshield on the urethane at the mark you made during your dry fit. Lower the driver’s side of the windshield onto the urethane and line it up with the dry-fit mark; it is now in place.

29. Press firmly to ensure a good seal.

30. Before re-installing the parts, check for leaks. Use a leak detector to go over the perimeter of the windshield. If you find a leak, apply pressure or add more urethane to the spot and ensure that the glass makes contact with the wet urethane.

31. Re-install the removed parts in reverse order.

32. Allow the urethane to cure according to the urethane manufacturer’s recommended cure time before returning the vehicle to the customer. Warning: Disregarding the safe drive-away time that your urethane manufacturer recommends could jeopardize the structural integrity of the vehicle and the safety of its passengers.

33. You have completed the removal and replacement of the windshield.

B. Back glass
Removal

There are two back glasses on this vehicle: an upper lite and a lower lite that are separated by a midlevel spoiler. Make sure that you have the right parts. Back glass part numbers are FB24453 and FB24454.

Upper glass removal
1. The upper glass lite has a wiper that goes through the glass in the lower driver-side corner. When at rest, the wiper points upward.

2. Remove the rear wiper by removing the cap. Pry up on the back edge of the cap and slide outward. Remove the 12-mm nut from the wiper base.

3. The washer nozzle is through the glass on the top. To access the washer hose to disconnect, remove the grommet at the interior top of the rear door frame and disconnect the hose from the washer nozzle.

4. The interior garnish moldings must be removed to access the spoiler fasteners, and defroster and antenna leads.

5. The interior luggage compartment is covered with a two-piece hinging cover that hangs from the interior garnish moldings. To remove the top cover hangers, slide the hangers up and off the tabs. The lower cover hangers require the opening of caps and a Phillips screw removal.

6. Once the hangers are released, remove the interior garnish moldings by pulling the trim firmly but carefully from the rear door frame.

7. Disconnect the defroster and antenna leads.

8. Remove the 9-mm fasteners from the spoiler. Remove the spoiler from the door frame. Note, the glass is exposed on all sides so take care during cutout.

Lower glass removal
1. The lower glass has a Honda logo and is a dealer purchase. It has an underside molding around the entire perimeter of the glass.

2. The lower glass requires only spoiler and lower garnish molding removal for interior access.

Installation
1. After cutting the back glass out, remove contaminants such as dirt, moisture and other debris from the pinchweld.

2. Dry fit the new glass to the opening. Mark your glass using a grease pencil or retention molding tape.

3. Place your vacuum cups on the new back glass in the appropriate location.

4. Set the glass onto the old urethane.

5. With the back glass resting in the opening, make sure it is in the right spot.

6. Adjust both sides to the correct setting, marking the passenger side, then the driver side. Lift the glass and place it on a windshield stand or suitable workstation.

7. Follow the urethane manufacturer’s recommendations for installation.

8. Clean the inside of the back glass using a urethane manufacturer-recommended product. Do not touch the bonding area of the back glass after cleaning, prepping or priming it.

9. Wear powder-free Nitrile gloves to keep off chemicals.

10. Apply the glass prep and primer following the urethane manufacturer’s recommendations.

11. Using a pinchweld scraper, remove as much of the original urethane as the urethane manufacturer recommends. Before removing the old urethane, make sure there are no contaminants and do not touch the pinchweld after prepping the area.

12. Apply the pinchweld primer only to the areas where it is needed. Allow preps and primers to dry as recommended by the urethane manufacturer.

13. Apply a triangular bead of urethane to the same path as the freshly cut urethane on the pinchweld. Before cutting your V-notch, cut the tip off of your nozzle with a nozzle-cutter. With the cut nozzle, measure to the top of the roofline, and at 1/16-inch higher than the roofline and bodyline, make a mark on the nozzle with a pen or marker. Notch the nozzle up to the marked line; this will give you the appropriate triangular bead.

14. Place your vacuum cups on the back glass in the appropriate location. Set the back glass in the opening.

15. The back glass is now ready to be decked. Press firmly to ensure a good seal.

16. Before re-installing the parts, check for leaks. Use a leak detector to go over the perimeter of the glass. If you find a leak, apply more pressure to the spot and ensure that the glass makes contact with the wet urethane.

17. Re-install the removed parts in reverse manner.

18. Allow the urethane to cure according to the urethane manufacturer’s recommended cure time before returning the vehicle to the customer.

19. Check the operation of the wiper, washer, defroster and antennas.

20. You have completed the removal and replacement of the back glass.
