VW Touareg TDI 2015 (на английском языке)

2015 Volkswagen Touareg TDI.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg TDI.

The diesel option will only be suitable for some drivers, but regardless of engine, the Touareg is a solid luxury SUV.

Overview-a high quality and luxurious SUV with a spacious cabin.

Pros-excellent build quality and materials.

Cons-still a very conservative design, somewhat bland next to its competitors.

Value- for money-good.

What would I change?-a more unique exterior styling.

How would I spec it?-with a gas engine.

Full disclosure:I’m not a fan of diesel power for my driving lifestyle. I know there are staunch fans ofdieseland in certain circumstances, it makes good sense to choose thisalternative powerplant. For now, though, let’s leave this part of the discussion until later in the review. Right now, we have a rather impressive SUV, regardless of which engine is under the hood.

The 2015 Volkswagen Touareg TDI is an impressive SUV with either a diesel or gas engine.

The Volkswagen Touareg is the flagship SUVof the VW brand, and like its secondcousins the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, luxury and build quality are the goals above off-road abilities. It is interesting to note that the diesel engine models of each brand generates 240 hp and each costs approximately $4,000 more than their gasoline fuelled versions. The Touareg and Cayenne are built on the same vehicle platform (Porsche is owned by Volkswagen) but the Cayenne is endowed with sportier attributes and a higher base price.

The exterior styling of the 2015 Touareg has changed very little in the past year, mainly some with additional chrome trim pieces in the horizontal grille up front and along the sills and some new paint colours. This is not to say the Touareg isn’t a handsome machine, it is, but in a restrained manner. The front has squarish bi-xenon headlights, the rear features LED tail lights and in between, the large wheel arches are filled with 20-inch alloy wheels on the Execline (top-of-the-line) model that we are testing here.

There is nothing left off the SUV styling cues list, nothing radical or sporty, and perhaps that is a slight disadvantage for the VW, because it is conservative where others take a chance. There’s nothing offensive, but nothing to excite one’s heart either.

The 2015 Volkswagen Touareg TDI has styling that’s on the conservative side of things

The interior design of the cabin follows the same theme of practical luxury with minor updates from 2014 – leather colours, nice Audi-like aluminum switches and buttons, etc. Whereas the exterior left me feeling ho-hum, the interior was much more impressive. There’s an immediate sense of quality and fine workmanship here. The styling remains on the safe side, but the Touareg is now something one would want to take for a drive with no particular place to go. You just want to be in it.

The panoramic sunroof is quite stunning in its proportions, going nearly from side to side, front to back in two panels, the front of which slides back. Unfortunately, the wind noise quite ruins the experience, but while closed, it is wonderful both in daylight and under the stars.

Less obvious is the slew of safety-minded driving aids that the engineers have working diligently behind the scenes. There is Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Area View thanks to four cameras, Front Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist and Side Assist. Should you unfortunately have an accidental impact in the Touareg, the Automatic Post Collision braking system applies the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, so residual kinetic energy is reduced.

There are two engine choices for the Touareg: a 3.6-litre FSI V6 with 280 hp and 266 lb.-ft. of torque and the TDI 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel V6 with 240 hp and a whopping 406 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s important to know that torque is the "pulling”power of an engine, good for hauling heavy loads like a trailer. Both of these engines are backed by an eight-speed Dynamic Shift Program (DSP) and Sport mode automatic transmission with Tiptronic 4MOTION all-wheel drive. No whiny CVT (continuously variable transmissions) here.

On the road, the driver and passengers are treated to a solid yet comfortable ride. The Touareg is well isolated from road noise, all the better for listening to the Dynaudio 620-watt digital audio system with 12 speakers.

Would I buy the TDI or gasoline version of the Touareg? At this price range of $68,575 MSRP for the diesel Touareg Execline trim, I’d be looking at the Audi Q7 3.0 TFSI (gasoline) quattro Vorsprung tiptronic at $63,600. I like the more aggressive exterior styling and artful interior.

The 4MOTION all-wheel-drive setup is seamless and unobtrusive with a simple knob to control the modes with a choice of on or off road. How simple is that? The steering is firm and on the heavy side, but that’s not unusual for a large luxury SUV with AWD. It’s much better than some of the domestic SUVs in the class with their over-boosted power steering and lack of road feel.

We can’t avoid discussing The Good, The Bad & The Smelly aspects of the diesel option. The good is the abundant engine torque from the 3.0-litre, the power that sets you back into your seat. This is the grunt that moves the Touareg from a stoplight or when pulling a trailer. Diesel engines excel at pulling things, like a happy Labrador dog with a chew toy. One more good point is the 20% to 30% better fuel mileage possible with a diesel-powered vehicle. The bad is the higher initial cost of a diesel-powered vehicle. As I mentioned earlier, the TDI Touareg is $4,000 more than the same model with the gasoline engine. The cost of diesel is about 10¢ more per litre recently and sometimes more during winter months when demand for heating oil is at its peak (it’s the same stuff). In North America, diesel is not available at all filling stations. Lastly, diesel stinks when you get it on your hands and if you pump diesel more than once, you will get some on you so carry some wet-wipes. Diesels are ideally suited to long-distance driving and hauling heavy loads.

Regardless of engine, the Touareg is a quality product that is a mark above the Volkswagen brand, which works slightly against its perceived value. A price of nearly $70,000 is a lot for a Volkswagen, the creator of the Love Bug and hippy vans, no matter how nice the Touareg is.
